Who is the ideal franchisee?
One of our most frequently asked questions is what we are looking for in an ideal Franchisee. Our group of Franchisees is very diverse, including Entrepreneurs, Accountants, Flight Attendants and former employees of large corporations. However, there are a number of qualities that our most successful Franchisees have in common.
Attitude. The ideal Franchisee has a positive attitude, is passionate and enthusiastic, and has an entrepreneurial spirit. Successful Franchisees are appreciative of their customers and employees, recognizing that they are essential to the success and growth of their business. Successful Franchisees are willing to act as a role model for their employees, and provide them with the necessary training to develop their skills as a member of the Marble Slab Creamery team.
Integrity. The ideal Franchisee is an individual that has integrity in all aspects of their business operations.
Participation. Must be willing to follow a proven system that establishes consistent protocol for all aspects of running a successful business. They will work "in" the business to learn the System provided to them by Marble Slab Creamery, then work "on" the business to promote new venues for building customer loyalty, attracting new customers, and promoting catering, custom cakes, and to-go sales. The Franchisee will also commit to maintain consistent superior standards in store sanitation, cleaning and customer service practices.
Finances. The ideal Franchisee will have the financial resources to establish and expand their business.
Community Involvement. The ideal Franchisee is active in their community and community organizations.
Marketing. The ideal Franchisee is a proactive grassroots marketer. They seek out the venues that they perceive will be most valuable in growing their business. They will collaborate with the Corporate Office to determine proactive marketing plans and strategies for their business.
What is my investment to start my own Marble Slab Creamery?
The investment required to start your own Marble Slab Creamery is outlined below, based on average costs franchisees experience.

What should I expect during the franchise process?
There are nine steps to becoming a Franchisee. We have listed all the steps below to help you move through the process efficiently.

Once we have had the chance to review your Profile, we will mail or e-mail you a copy of our Franchise Disclosure Documents for Marble Slab Creamery.
Upon receipt of the Franchise Disclosure Documents, please sign the two acknowledgement pages enclosed and either mail, send them via scanned e-mail, or fax these pages back to us.
When you have reviewed the material in the Franchise Disclosure Documents we ask that you call us to set up a short phone interview.
We recommend that you contact several of our franchisees so that you may ask them about their experience and opinions of the business first hand.
We will mutually confirm a convenient time for you to schedule a visit to our headquarters in Calgary for a "Discovery Day" to meet our team.
Discovery Day is primarily for your benefit. It is your chance to voice questions and concerns, face to face, with our experts in operations, construction, real estate, accounting and marketing. Your visit to Calgary will also provide you with a chance to see our company owned store and learn more about the day-to-day store activities.
Shortly after Discovery Day we will contact you for a final discussion to determine our mutual interest and decision in becoming a Marble Slab Creamery Franchisee. Once you have been approved as a franchisee, we will send you two executable copies of the Franchisee Agreement.
When the franchise agreement is signed and the Franchise Fee of $25,000.00 is paid, we will begin the development process.

Is previous food experience necessary in order to obtain a Marble Slab Creamery Franchise? Experience is always helpful; however, we offer a complete training program at our company-owned store and head office in Calgary, Alberta.
Can a store be purchased as an investment without my full-time management? Yes, provided you have a qualified manager to operate the store. We believe that the personal attention and involvement of each franchisee is important to the store's success, and we require that each franchisee attend our company's training classes.
What is the size of a typical store? Between 600 and 1,200 square feet. Rent typically varies from $3,000 to $8,000 per month depending on the size of the store and its location.
What are the construction costs of a new store? Leasehold improvements are typically in the $110,000 range. These figures include a landlord built-out contribution of $12,000 - $120,000, although this amount will vary depending on the location.
How much is the franchise fee, royalty fee and advertising fee? The franchise fee is $25,000 for single unit operators and $22,000 for multiple units. The royalty and advertising fees are 6% and 2% respectively of monthly gross sales.
What does this franchise fee cover? It secures the right to own and operate a Marble Slab Creamery in a given location, and the right to use the Marble Slab Creamery trade name, trademark, recipes, décor and manner of doing business. It also includes site selection, approval, and assistance with lease negotiations, architectural layout, construction assistance and most importantly, ten days of training in Calgary, Alberta. During the training we will teach you all that you will need to operate and manage a Marble Slab Creamery store. Our Corporate Supervisors will help you open your store, assist with employee training and offer you continual operational supervision and recommendations. Our Marketing Coordinator will collaborate with you to employ a marketing, advertising, and public relations strategy specific to your community before and after your store is open.
How much cash will I need? This depends on your overall financial strength and your relationship with banks. Generally, at least 30% - 40% of the total investment is required by financial institutions.
Where do I get the equipment? We have established relationships with equipment suppliers that result in savings for the franchisees.
Can any part of the store construction and required equipment be financed? Yes, loans through your local bank and the Business Development Council may be available. Also, with proper financial strength, equipment may be leased through leasing companies.
Do I buy supplies from Marble Slab Creamery? Only gift cards are purchased from the franchisor, otherwise all equipment and inventory is purchased by suppliers directly. We require specific quality controls to be maintained, although the franchisee may buy from any supplier whose goods meet our superior standards. Marble Slab Creamery has historically been successful in securing volume discounts for it's franchisee because of the purchasing power of the franchise system.

A fee of 2% of gross sales is collected monthly from each franchisee and used for the marketing of their individual store, and for Marble Slab Creamery Canada-wide.
Franchise Disclosure Document
A document disclosing information about the franchise, including information regarding existing locations, financial statements for the master franchisor, and a copy of the franchise agreement.
Construction or improvements for the purpose of preparing the premises to conduct the tenant's business. Improvements are permanently attached to the premises unless they are trade fixtures, and they remain with the premises after the end of the lease term.
Letter of Intent (LOI)
A preliminary agreement stating the proposed terms for a final contract with a Landlord. They can be binding or non-binding.
Punch or Deficiency List
An itemized list, typically prepared by the architect or construction manager documenting incomplete or unsatisfactory items after the contractor has notified the store owner that the tenant space is substantially complete.
A fee of 6% of gross sales is collected from each franchisee on a monthly basis. This fee covers the on-going use of the Marble Slab Creamery name, logo, proprietary information, inspections, etc.
The cash available to an enterprise for day-to-day operations. It allows bills to be paid while building the business with cash sales. In accounting, it is current assets less current liabilities.
